Portland Trail Blazers' first-year head coach Micah Nori was his usual personable, funny, logical self during Media Day on Monday. He handled the questions well, which is no small feat considering the challenging roster general manager Joe Cronin has left him with following a surprising offseason. The biggest surprise was Cronin's decision to acquire Ja Morant from the Memphis Grizzlies, which contradicted the previously established defensive identity for this young core.
At Media Day, Nori was asked how he plans to maintain that defensive identity with Morant and Damian Lillard now in the backcourt picture. He remained firm that Morant and Lillard will share minutes alongside each other, highlighting the defensive weapons Portland has to cover those limitations.

The Blazers expect this unique backcourt pairing to work largely because of the defensive infrastructure they already have in place, with Nori comparing Toumani Camara to the strong wing defenders he's had in the past as an assistant with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
"I've been around some pretty good wing defenders in Minnesota, very fortunate that Camara is right there with them," he said.
Going back to his introductory press conference, Nori made a more specific comparison between Camara and Jaden McDaniels.
He's clearly excited about the opportunity to have another two-way wing at his disposal. However, expectations must be somewhat tempered when comparing Camara to McDaniels, at least on the offensive end.
With all the injuries Portland had last season, Camara had a great opportunity to generate more offense as a playmaker and shot creator. The fact that he didn't become a go-to option suggests he never will, which lowers his ceiling compared to what McDaniels has recently accomplished offensively in Minnesota alongside Anthony Edwards.
Camara is still an incredibly valuable piece for the Blazers thanks to his 3-and-D skillset and player archetype. And the Blazers don't necessarily need him to be that offensive force that McDaniels has quietly become in Minnesota. That was part of the point of bringing in all these guards and playmakers, to generate more offense and get more help for Deni Avdija.
Camara may not have the highest ceiling on this roster because of his offensive limitations as a player who still largely needs to be set up to score. To his credit, he's come a long way in that regard as a former late second-round pick in 2023.
This 3-and-D version of Camara is one of those high-floor, low-ceiling players every team needs to contend with. That's why Nori immediately recognized his value, drawing comparisons to McDaniels and the defensive wings he had to work with in Minnesota. He knows how important that Camara piece is on this roster, especially now that Cronin has unconventionally embraced an undersized backcourt.
It didn't work with Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum the first time around, but Lillard also has never had this roster built so well to compensate for his weaknesses. Camara will be a huge part of that, especially given how thin the Blazers are at wing/forward position heading into the 2026-27 season.
Nori's excitement for having Camara on this roster is contagious, as he should be a huge piece in making this lopsided roster work in Rip City.
